Mary Priest, a Practical Nursing student at the Highland Community College Technical Center in Atchison, has won a $1000 scholarship from the Kansas State Board of Nursing for the essay she wrote regarding the "Unique Contribution of Nursing to Healthcare". This is a prestigious award as only two PN students across the state are selected for the scholarship. The students' essays will be published in an upcoming KSBN Newsletter.
Priest decided on a career in health care following the death of her grandfather and in spite of trepidations caused by prior work experience in health care settings. The death of her grandfather who had health complications and her desire to make a difference in health care settings, rather than be negatively influenced by them, led Priest to make the commitment necessary to be accepted by and succeed in the Nursing program at Highland.
With the support of her three daughters, Priest commutes from Hoyt to her classes in Atchison and her work at the Holton Community Hospital. The KSBN scholarship will help her achieve her nursing education goals and prepare her for her health care career. In her essay, Priest noted that she enjoys “taking care of patients at their most vulnerable time in their lives; being able to talk with them and brighten their days or being able to provide them and their families with comfort.” Priest also noted that she now has “a passion for caring for people and am able to show that to the patients I care for at the Holton Community Hospital where I plan to further my career.”
