The Highland Community College men’s track and field team pulled out a strong team effort, taking first on February 15 at their home track meet, with nine schools participating. Leading the way were National Qualifiers Rey Quinones (Clermont, FL) and Steven Hill (Lawrence) with wins in the 3000 and triple jump, respectively. Dalton Ricketts (Oskaloosa) won a close battle with teammate Tyus Jacob (Topeka) in the 400 Dash. DeAnte Ambler (Kansas City, KS) qualified for Nationals in the 55 meter dash with a 3rd place time of 6.45. Jacob Lott (Horton) added to his storied throwing career, breaking the school record in the weight throw. He also added a second in the shot put. The 4x800 consisting of Quinones-Velez, Clayton Stoppkotte (Shelton, NE), Trevon Constant (Orlando, FL), and Carlos Gonzalez-Tabares (Jacksonville, FL), ran an exciting relay, finishing second, just missing Butler’s team by 9 hundredths of a second. That set the tone for the rest of the day on the track as the Scottie men produced an amazing 27 personal best performances.
The Scottie men next travel to the Jayhawk Conference/Regional Championship at the University of Kansas, Friday, February 21.
