Construction of the Highland Community College Building Trades program house in Highland has progressed to interior work now being done by students in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Electrical programs. Instructor Jim Dame’s Building Trades students moved quickly to frame and side the house and are now completing the roof and shingling.
With the framing, siding, and roofing nearing completion, HVAC and Electrical students began working inside the house on Monday, October 16. Under the tutelage of HVAC instructor Troy Rea and Electrical instructor Duane Coder, the students learned first-hand the challenges of taking classroom work to an actual worksite. According to Coder, “We can build all the inside instructional walls we want, but until students get on a worksite, they just can’t visualize all the different obstacles they will find in running wire from a box to an outlet. Running that wire in this house is a great instructional experience.”
Work on the house will continue until spring when it will be available for purchase.
