Highland Football Opens Season with Big Win

Highland Community College head football coach visited with over 80 football alumni prior to Saturday’s season opener and shared with them the players to watch.  In short order, two of the players mentioned – quarterback Kahlil Render and Demarre Kitt, a transfer from Clemson – connected on the second play of the game, and the Scotties continued to roll for a 26-16 victory over the Dodge City Conquistadors, who were ranked number eight in the nation.

The football alumni added to the opening day crowd for the only night game on Kessinger Field this season that attracted over 1,500 fans, one of the largest crowds ever to watch the Scotties in action.  And the Scotties delivered, excelling on both sides of the ball and on special teams – just what was needed to start the season in positive fashion and serve notice to the rest of the Jayhawk Conference that the fifth place pre-season ranking may have been a bit low.

The challenges will continue for the Scotties as they next travel to Garden City for an afternoon contest on September 3.  Coach Arnold always looks forward to playing the Broncbusters as he started his collegiate career at Garden City.  The 1:00 contest can be viewed on the stream provided on the Highland website at www.highlandcc.edu.
