Highland Football Gets Second Road Win

After a tough beating at home against Iowa Western, the Highland Community College football team was able to sandwich that loss with two road wins as they downed the Benedictine College junior varsity the previous week and traveled to Iowa Falls, Iowa for their second win of the season, using all three major parts of the game.  The win prepares them for their second Jayhawk Conference contest as they host Fort Scott this week.  Kickoff is at 1:00 at Kessinger Stadium on the Highland campus as the Scotties welcome their parents for Family Day and the annual Wild Dog motorcycle ride.

Highland started strong and maintained the pressure to hand Ellsworth Community College a 43-12 defeat, scoring with the offense, defense, and kicking game.  The score was 12-0 at halftime as the Scotties had a 45-yard Josh Pasley (Lenexa) field goal, a safety, and a Tramaine Batten (Dunedin, FL) touchdown.

The second half showcased more scoring, with five touchdowns in the third quarter, three by Highland and two from Ellsworth.  Coming off a good second half showing against Iowa Western, freshman quarterback Danten Cosentino (Shawnee Mission) had a stronger second half as he passed for a pair of touchdowns, one to Troy Grant (Brooksville, FL) and one to Steve Williams (Bonner Springs), that increased Highland’s lead to 26-0 before Ellsworth added tallies on their side of the board.  Ellsworth had two successful scoring drives to make the game interesting at 26-12, but Bob Pugh (Foley, AL) took the heart out of the Panthers with a kickoff return to put the Scotties up 33-12 going into the fourth quarter.

Highland finished out the scoring with another Pasley field goal and a Chaz Union (Overland Park) pick six as the Scotties celebrated the win and started to prepare for the upcoming Fort Scott game.
