Highland Football Falls to NEO

The Highland Community College football team lost on the road Saturday night 36-12 to the Northeastern Oklahoma A & M Norsemen.

The Scotties dug an early hole, giving the Norsemen a 9-0 first quarter lead.  NEO struck in the first minute of the game with a 9-yard touchdown run and added a two point safety later in the quarter when a high snap went over the head of Scottie punter Gary Flack (Leavenworth).  Early in the second quarter, the Scotties got on the board when sophomore Brian Handley (Monticello, AR) punched in a 3-yard touchdown run.  The PAT failed.  Less than two minutes later, the Norsemen answered with their own 1-yard touchdown run to make the halftime score 16-6.

NEO registered the only third-quarter scoring with a 13-yard touchdown reception with just two minutes to play in the period. In the fourth, NEO scored eight points on another Scottie safety and a long touchdown pass before Highland responded with a 9-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Shunquez Stephens (Flowery Branch, GA) to sophomore Buddy Lisk (Harveyville) with 5:35 to play in the game.  Again, the Highland PAT failed.  NEO finished the scoring with a 8-yard touchdown run with just over a minute to play for the final of 36-12.

Handley was a Scottie offensive highlight with 126 yards gained on 15 rushing attempts.  Stephens rushed for 36 yards on 16 carries.  In the air, Stephens connected on seven of 11 passing attempts for 69 yards.  Freshman running back Teddy Colbert (Olathe) caught three passes for 27 yards.  Freshman Chris King (Olathe) caught two balls for 17 yards.

Defensively, the Scotties were led by sophomore Brandon King (Alabaster, AL) who had 11 total stops, including a fumble recovery and two blocked field goals on special teams.  Sophomore linebacker Tevin Hanley (Riverdale, GA) had ten tackles, while fellow sophomore linebacker Terell Jordan (Atchison) had nine stops.

The Scotties fell to 0-2 overall on the season.  Highland next travels to Dodge City for a Jayhawk Conference showdown with the 0-2 Conquistadors on Saturday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m.
