Highland Cross Country Wins MSSU Southern Stampede

The first national cross country ranking of the season came out on Wednesday, and the Highland Community College men took the number ten position in those rankings.  The men travelled to Joplin, MO, on Saturday and did not disappoint, bringing home the Championship at the Missouri Southern Stampede on Saturday with 86 Points.  Baker University was in second place with 106.  Twenty three teams were represented for the men's race. HCC's Gold Wave on the course of freshman Jose Jaime (McAllen, TX), freshman Zekarias Philipo (Houston, TX), and sophomore Jorge Guerrero (San Antonio, TX)  finished 3-4-5 respectively to lead the team to this victory. All three runners now rank in the top 10 all time for HCC. Rounding out the scoring was sophomore John Brunner (Elbing), and Jordan Adams (Princeton, MO).

Coach Chad Clevenger noted on Saturday, "For most of our team, this was our first 8k race, so to come out like we did, with confidence, was fantastic!  This was a huge program win! This is a big high profile meet, and Championship atmosphere! We got out hard and aggressively. That set the tone early.  We ran a very gutty second half and held on for the win. Individually, we had three All-Time top 10 HCC performances.  Jose Jaime now ranks fifth, Zekarias Philipo eighth, and Jorge Guerrero ninth.  This was an overall great team effort and a champion’s way to respond after the rankings came out Wednesday.  With the Emporia State Invitational on Friday, this will be a short week, so back to work. We talked on the bus on our way home, how our mission is to be one of the best programs in the country year after year.  When we have a win like this, it is big for the whole Scottie sports program -- men, women, coaches, families, administration.  Our program is made up of great people willing to sacrifice for each other.  We have two teams that have bought in to the plan, and they both work so hard.  When that happens, it creates a positive environment, where everyone contributes one way or another. As always, we will stay humble, stay hungry, and continue to represent the College and community positively."

The men will be back on the course Friday, September 23, at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course for the Emporia State Invitational.  Women will race at 5:00 pm, followed by the men at 5:45 pm.
