Highland Baseball Splits at Allen

The Highland Community College baseball team traveled to Allen Community College over the weekend, winning 4-3 and 6-5 on Saturday, before losing 7-1 and 3-1 on Sunday to gain a split in the four game series.  Both teams are 13-19 in Jayhawk play heading into the final weekend of league play.

In game one on Saturday, HCC scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Vance Gorman (Osawatomie) and a throwing error to take a 4-3 lead and got solid relief pitching from Jacob Fish (Glen Pool, OK) and Derek Rottinghaus (Seneca) to make the lead stand up for the win.  Fish pitched one and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit to pick up the win, while Rottinghaus retired all four batters he faced, striking out two to pick up his seventh save of the season.  Tyler Goldsberry (Papillion, NE) had three hits to lead HCC hitters, and Craig Hill (Morris, OK) had two hits.

In game two, Ethan DeVader (St. Marys) pitched three and one-third innings of scoreless relief, and the Scotties rallied from a 5-3 deficit to defeat Allen 6-5.  HCC scored one run in the fourth inning on a RBI ground-out by Goldsberry to close the gap to 5-4, and then scored two runs in the fifth inning on back to back sacrifice flies by Josh Reynolds (Gretna, NE) and Hill to give the Scotties the lead.  DeVader finished his outing, pitching a scoreless sixth inning, and Rottinghaus pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his second save of the day.  Goldsberry, Reynolds, and Andrew Standish (Omaha, NE) each had two hits.

In game one on Sunday, Allen scored in four consecutive innings and HCC was limited to five hits as the Red Devils defeated HCC 7-1.

In game two, the Scotties took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a lead-off triple by Standish, followed by a RBI single by Alex Head (Topeka), but HCC was unable to score the rest of the game.  Allen scored two in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then added a run in the sixth inning to get a 3-1 win.  Jerad Hawkins (Wathena) pitched five and one-third solid innings for HCC, but was hurt by a lack of offensive support in taking the loss.

The Scotties are 23-24 over-all, and 13-19 in league play heading into the final week of the regular season.  HCC travels to Southeast Nebraska on Tuesday, April 24, then to North Central Missouri on Thursday, April 26, before finishing league play at home on Saturday, April 28, and Sunday, April 29, against Fort Scott Community College.
