Claire Geiger has been named a 2023 Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver, and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion.

“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s leaders of the global community.”

Geiger was named to the All-Kansas Academic team after her application received high scores from a committee of Highland Community College faculty and administrators. Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership and engagement in college and community service.  Her recognition as a Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar was based on scores earned in the All-USA Academic Team competition, for which more than 2,400 applications were received this year.

English faculty member, Mary Bryant, reflects on her interactions with Claire stating her "insightfulness, compassion and leadership will benefit many people and projects as she moves on to the next adventure!" Her tutoring supervisor, Lexy Clark, praises her as “extremely intelligent, funny, and caring.” She was also characterized as being “a very intelligent, hardworking student who displayed exceptional problem-solving skills” by Physics instructor, Ron Adams.

Claire attended Hiawatha High School where she was the 2021 Senior Class President. She earned an Associate of Arts degree from Highland Community College in the Fall of 2022. Claire is from Robinson, Kansas, and is the daughter of Jack and Deborah Geiger. Claire transferred to Kanas State University and is now studying agricultural communications and journalism with a secondary major in natural resources and environmental sciences. She regularly volunteers for the City of Robinson, the Atchison Art Association and the Organic Crop Improvement Association. She served as President of Scottie Prints Club in her first year, a student tutor at HCC and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

Geiger will be recognized locally at the Alpha Zeta Gamma Induction Ceremony held at 5 p.m. in Culbertson Auditorium on the Highland Community College Campus on Sunday, April 2. She will participate in a state-wide recognition ceremony during a luncheon in Junction City on April 14. Additionally, she will be announced during Phi Theta Kappa’s annual international convention, PTK Catalyst, to be held in Columbus, Ohio, April 20-22.

“We thank the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for recognizing these student leaders and for investing in their futures,” said Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, President and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa. “Scholarships like these are integral to the success of these students in reaching their educational and career goals.”
