Eight outstanding Kansas high school seniors have been selected as Foundation Scholars at Highland Community College. The 2013 class of Foundation Scholars includes Kaylie Berkley of Dexter, Madison Demel of Goddard, Aisha Diveley of Highland, Matthew Hastings of Hoyt, Jordann Smith of Andover, Katelynn Smith of Wichita, Briley Ware of Arkansas City, and Krista Wilgers of Palmer. Generally, up to five Kansas high school graduates are selected as Foundation Scholars each year. This year proved to be an exceptional year, not likely to be replicated.
Selection as a Foundation Scholar is based on an application process that documents the applicant's academic record and involvement in a variety of school and community activities. Final selections are then based on an interview with the selection committee. HCC Foundation Scholars are asked to continue their record of academic achievement and involvement on campus and in the community. The Foundation Scholars meet monthly to determine community/campus service projects for the month.
