Blue Dragons Burst Scottie Bubble

The Highland Community College football team planned on building on its upset win over Butler a week ago when it traveled to take on the Hutchinson Blue Dragons on Saturday night. Unfortunately, the Blue Dragons had other plans as they defeated the Scotties 36-20.

The Scotties, 3-3 overall and 2-2 in Jayhawk Conference play, looked out of sync the entire first half while the Blue Dragons used an obvious speed advantage to build a 27-3 halftime lead. The only Scottie points in the first two stanzas came from freshman Josh Pasley (Lenexa) who connected on a 33-yard field goal with 14:09 left to play in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, freshman quarterback Brandon Bergeron (Lafayette, LA) found freshman wide-out Austin Moses (Overland Park) from nine yards out to cap a six play, 70 yard drive that cut the score to 30-10. With 2:47 left to play in the third, Bergeron hit freshman receiver Brandon Peters (Mobile, AL) on a 64-yard touchdown pass to make the score 36-17. In the fourth quarter, Pasley hit a 23-yard field goal to end the scoring for the game.

Bergeron finished the game with 320 yards, completing 25 of 44 pass attempts with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Peters caught six passes for 107 yards and one score. Sophomore wide-out Melvin McAdams (Houston, TX) caught five passes for 41 yards. The Scottie ground game was kept in check all night, only gaining a total of 30 yards. Sophomore running back Marlon Mitchell (Overland Park) rushed for 23 yards on seven carries.

Defensively, the Scotties were led by sophomore strong safety Mike Brown (Fort Lauderdale, FL) with 13 total tackles. Sophomore linebacker Brandon Lockwood (Largo, FL) had six total stops and one sack.

The Scotties next host the Coffeyville Red Ravens for its annual Homecoming game on Saturday, October 5, on Kessinger Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
