Karen McDow, the daughter of Walter and Mary Yost, who now lives in Ohio, recently visited the campus of Highland Community College where her father was a long-time art instructor. Yost, who also taught art at Atchison High School and lived on the farm where he was born southwest of Atchison, was the Kansas Artist of the Year in 1976 and was well-known for his water color scenes of rural and farm life. McDow visited the College to see 12 of those water color paintings and one oil which are on display on the second floor of the College Administration Building. McDow was familiar with every scene depicted in the pieces the College owns and was also able to view a Birger Sandzen print which was donated to the College by Yost’s friend, Richard Ahlborn, longtime curator of the Smithsonian Museum of American History, Division of Cultural History in Washington, D.C.
