Softball Wins in Dramatic Fashion

In a very eventful double header, the Scottie softball team swept Hutchinson last Friday to improve to 6-0 in KJCCC conference play. The finish to game one was one that head coach Heidi Jordan says she may never forget. As the game was progressing into the later innings, the Highland offense couldn’t seem to find their rhythm and found themselves down 3-1 headed to the bottom of the seventh. With one out in the inning, freshman Emma Hill (King City, MO) singled to left field with the hope of getting a late game rally going. That’s exactly what happened. Next batter up Holly Wilmarth (Maryville, MO), hit a towering two run homerun to deep center field to tie the game at 3-3 with just one out. The Hutchinson defense then forced another groundout for the second out of the inning. The Scotties were down to their last hope of ending the game in regulation when freshman Kaley Pyles (DeKalb, MO) stepped to the plate, and she delivered in a big way. Pyles sent a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for a dramatic walk off homerun, and a 4-3 Scottie victory. Sophomore pitcher Lauren Massey (Lawrence), threw five scoreless innings in relief for the victory.

Knowing that they had escaped with a victory in game one despite being outplayed, the Scotties wasted no time proving a dramatic finish was not going to be necessary. Highland put three runs on the board in the first inning of game two, and eventually finished with a 8-2 victory. Freshman pitcher Natalie Abrahams (Cape Town, South Africa), went seven innings in the circle, limiting any scoring chances for the Hutchinson offense. Holly Wilmarth once again was hot at the plate hitting her fifth home run of the week and going 3-4 in the game. The Scotties host Labette on Tuesday, March 19th in their next conference action.
