Scotties Surge to 4-2 on the Season

The Highland Community College football team used a second half surge on Saturday night at Independence for a 27-15 victory and their fourth win of the 2014 season.

The Scotties, 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Jayhawk Conference play, found themselves in an early hole on the road against the winless Independence Pirates. Trailing 6-0 after the Pirates missed an extra point in the second quarter, the Scotties had to settle for a field goal by sophomore Josh Pasley (Lenexa) to make the halftime score 6-3.

In the second half, freshman running back Traimaine Batten (Dunedin, FL) got the Scotties rolling with a 50-yard touchdown run, followed by another Pasley field goal to give Highland a 13-9 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, the Scotties extended their lead to 20-9 when freshman quarterback Danten Cosentino (Leawood) connected with freshman wide-out Troy Grant (Tampa, FL) for a passing touchdown. After the Pirates cut the lead to 20-15, sophomore defensive back Zach Haynes (Mulvane) sealed the win with an interception return for a touchdown and the 27-15 victory.

On offense for the Scotties, Batten led all categories with 113 yards rushing on 17 carries and the one score. Cosentino threw for 101 yards on 14 of 25 passing. Freshman Bob Pugh (Foley, AL) led the Scotties with 35 yards receiving on four catches.

Defensively, the Scotties were led by sophomore defensive back Cedric Vinson (Topeka) with 13 total tackles, including seven solo stops and two pass breakups. Freshman linebacker Tyree Horton (South Dade, FL) had nine total tackles including one sack. Haynes' return for a score was the fourth of the season for the Scottie defense.

The Scotties next host Iowa Central Community College for the annual Homecoming game on Saturday, October 11 at 1:00 pm on Kessinger Field.
