The Highland Community College football team got the offense going early and often in their 40-7 victory on Sunday afternoon over the visiting Midland University Junior Varsity.
The Scotties, 2-2 overall, jumped out to a 20-0 first quarter lead. Freshman running back William Young (Wichita) took the first ball into the end zone with a 3-yard rush, and freshman place kicker Josh Pasley (Lenexa) added the point after. On the next Highland possession, freshman quarterback Brandon Bergeron (Lafayette, LA) connected with sophomore wide out Desmond McGee (Wichita) on a 50-yard touchdown pass to make the score 13-0. The PAT was blocked by Midland. Late in the quarter, Young again found pay dirt with an 11-yard touchdown run, making the score 20-0.
In the second quarter, Midland cut the lead to 20-7 on a touchdown run. The Scotties came right back with a 2-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Elbert Johnson (Olathe). After a quick Midland turnover, the Scotties found the end zone again with Bergeron hooking up with freshman wide receiver Danny Weston (Leawood) from 16 yards out, making the halftime score 33-7. The only other score of the game came in the third quarter when Bergeron hit freshman wide receiver Austin Moses (Overland Park) on a 32-yard touchdown strike.
The Scotties next travel to #4 ranked Butler Community College on Saturday, September 21. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. in El Dorado, KS.
