Scotties Hold On For Big Win

The Highland Community College football team got a huge win on Saturday afternoon over the visiting Coffeyville Red Ravens by the final of 21-14.  This was the Scotties’ first win over Coffeyville since 2000 when the Scotties won by a score of 27-7.  The win also gives the Scotties their first four-win season since 2000.

The Scotties, 4-3 overall and 3-2 in Jayhawk Conference play, dominated the first half of play, building a 21-0 halftime lead. With 10:19 left in the first quarter, freshman Brandon Bergeron (Lafayette, LA) connected with sophomore Durwin Jones (Houston, TX) from eight yards out for the first touchdown of the day. Freshman Josh Pasley (Lenexa) added the point after for the Scotties. In the second quarter, Bergeron again found Jones in the back of the end zone on a spectacular catch that was clearly tipped by more than one Red Raven defender to increase the Scottie lead to 14-0 with 9:21 left in the half. On the next Scottie possession, Bergeron found sophomore Melvin McAdams (Houston, TX) on a 58-yard touchdown reception to close out scoring for the half.

In the second half, it was all Coffeyville as they scored once in each quarter and looked poised to tie the game when sophomore Brandon Thorpe (Tucker, GA) caused a fumble that essentially ended the game.

Bergeron connected on 30 of 39 pass attempts for 298 yards and three touchdowns.  Bergeron now has 17 touchdown passes for the season, three short of the HCC record 20 held by Jeff Abbott in 2000. In the game, Bergeron did set the HCC record for single season passing yards, currently at 2206.  The old record was 2100 yards by Billy Bob Orsagh in 2006.  Freshman Brandon Peters (Mobile, AL) caught nine passes for 51 yards. McAdams caught three passes for a team-high 92 yards. On the ground, Peters ran for 67 yards on 19 carries.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Scotties were led by sophomore Taylor Shaffer (Wamego) with 11 total tackles, including five solo and one fumble return for 13 yards. Sophomore Mike Brown (Oakland Park, FL) also had 11 total stops, including seven solo tackles.

The Scotties next travel to Garden City Community College on Saturday, October 12. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
