What began as a season destined to return to the National Tournament for the sixth straight year fell a couple of runs short for the Highland Community College softball squad. Going into the Regional Tournament as a number one seed based on yet another highly successful regular season, Highland Coach Heidi Jordan’s Scotties experienced the frustration of an error-prone defense in the first game of the double-elimination Regionals. The Scotties scored five runs but handed Coffeyville the win with five errors in one inning, dropping the first game 5-8.
The Scotties bounced back in the second game to take a thrilling 3-1 victory over Cowley that ended with a close play at the plate with a throw from left field that cut down a Cowley runner for the final out. That win meant the Scotties were alive for another day of Regional play.
On Sunday, the Scotties were again matched against the first game foe, Coffeyville, and, in another close game, this time in the Scotties’ favor, they took a 3-2 victory into the championship game that afternoon against the winner’s bracket foe, Johnson County. Johnson County is a familiar rival to fans of Scottie women’s basketball, and this time they proved to be the nemesis of the Scottie softballers, taking yet another close game with a 5-4 win, ending the Scotties’ season.
