Scottie Skid Continues with Loss at Coffeyville

The Highland Community College men’s basketball team’s losing streak increased to three games with a lop-sided loss at the hands of the Coffeyville Red Ravens on Saturday night by the final of 98-74.

The Scotties came out cold on Saturday and the Red Ravens took full advantage of the situation, racing out to a 30 point lead in the first half. Highland finally got things going late in the period and was able to rally the score back to 51-29 at halftime. In the second half, The Scotties never got closer than 13 points and Coffeyville cruised to the easy victory.

Sophomore De’Andre Upchurch (Flint, MI) connected on 6-10 three-point shots and led all scorers with 37 points. Sophomore Roderick Camphor (Baltimore, MD) was the only other Scottie in double figures with 10 points.

“In 18 years of coaching at the college level, I personally have never been more embarrassed in a team’s performance at this time of the year as I was in our play on Saturday night,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We talk all the time about teams that want the end of the season to come so that they can stop playing.  I just never dreamed we would become one of those teams.”

On Wednesday night, the Scotties hosted Allen County for their last regular season home game of the year. Highland would honor the seven sophomores that have given two years of hard work and dedication to the program and the school. In the first half, the Scotties built an early lead of nine points and held a 41-40 advantage at halftime. In the second half, the Red Devils quickly took the lead and would never relinquish it, leading by as many as 14 points. Highland mounted a rally with four minutes to play and cut the lead to seven points, but could not get any closer as Allen County won by the final of 82-71.

Camphor led all scorers with 22 points while Upchurch contributed with 18 points. Sophomore Jarvis Benard (Nome, TX) finished the game with 14 points.

The Scotties finished the season with a 15-15 overall record and an 8-10 record in Jayhawk Eastern Conference play. They next host the Johnson County Cavaliers on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the first round of the Region VI Division II playoffs.
