Scotties Season on the Gridiron Ends at Butler

The Highland Community College football team ended their best season ever as a member of the Jayhawk Conference on Sunday afternoon in El Dorado, falling by the final score of 38-7 to the #8 ranked Butler Grizzlies.

The Scotties finish the season with a first-ever Region VI playoff appearance and a 6-4 overall record under the direction of second-year head coach Ryan Held. The Scotties boasted the Jayhawk Conference’s top passing and overall offense. Highland threw for 305 yards per contest, while overall, moved the ball for 428 yards per game.

Sunday’s first round Region VI playoff game matched very familiar opponents. Coach Held served as the Grizzlies offensive coordinator prior to taking over at Highland. Also, Highland shocked Butler on September 21 by the final of 23-21, handing the Grizzlies their first home loss since 2005.

In the first quarter, it seemed that the Scotties might once again find a way to defeat the proverbial “Goliath.” After a long scoring drive that included a fake punt by Butler, the Scotties quickly drove the field and answered with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Bergeron (Lafayette, LA) to Durwin Jones (Houston, TX) to knot the score at 7-7.

Unfortunately for the large number of Scottie fans that made the trip to El Dorado, it would be all Butler for the rest of the game. The Grizzlies used a punishing ground game and a blitzing defense to keep the Scotties from derailing their eighth straight Region VI championship game appearance. Butler rushed for 254 yards on 53 carries and sacked Bergeron 12 times for a loss of 83 yards.

Bergeron completed 23 of 32 passes for 240 yards. Wide-out Melvin McAdams (Houston, TX) caught three balls for 58 yards. Running back Brandon Peters (Mobile, AL) led the Scotties with 27 yards rushing on 10 carries. He also caught three passes for 49 yards.

On defense, free safety Pat Martin (Greenville, SC) led all tacklers with 10 total stops, including eight solo tackles. Linebacker Marlon Williams (Overland Park) had nine total tackles, including one stop for loss.
