Scottie Men Run at ESU Invitational

The Highland Community College men’s cross country teams was in action on Friday evening at the Emporia State University Invitational Meet.

The Scotties continued to improve, finishing in a tie with Baker University for seventh place with 226 team points. More importantly, the Scotties were the top placing community college team with six Jayhawk Conference schools placing behind them. Fort Hays State University won the meet with 66 total team points. Cloud County’s Bernard Keter won the individual title with a time of 25:43.11.

Freshman Brian Martinez (Pasadena, TX) led the way for the 23rd ranked Scotties, just as he has done all season. Martinez finished in 13th place with a time of 27:20.16. Highland will have to work on running more as pack as the season progresses. The next Scottie runner, sophomore Seth Parres (O’Fallon, MO) finished in 47th place with a time of 28:51.44. Fellow sophomore Brett Simshauser (Cuba, MO) finished in 49th place. Freshman Rey Quinones (Clermont, FL) was the 53rd place finisher, while sophomore Chris Babel (Hiawatha) rounded out the Scottie scorers with a 64th place finish.

The Scottie women continue to battle through some mid-season injuries. Due to this, only four runners competed, and therefore Highland did not finish in the team standings. Baker University won the meet with 60 team points and Lauren Jaqua from Baker won the meet in 19:08.55.

The Scottie women harriers were led by sophomore Crystal Hoard (Randolph) with a 60th place finish in 21:53.03. Sophomore Becky Geib (Fairfax, MO) finished in 107th place in 23:35.46.
