Scottie Men Drop Two Out West

The Highland Community College men’s basketball team found life in the Jayhawk Western Conference a little tough going this early in the season at the Garden City Community College Pepsi Classic over the weekend. The Scotties fell to Jayhawk West Favorite Seward County by the final of 98-59. On Saturday, the Garden City Broncbusters took Highland down by the count of 91-70.

“We knew going into this classic that we would be severely tested and have a chance to expose the areas of our team that need a lot of work,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “Seward is the best team we have seen so far since I have been at Highland and Garden isn’t very far behind them. Our team has a long ways to go before we can call ourselves a good team.”

On Friday, Seward County jumped out early on the Scotties with outstanding defensive pressure, leading 49-29 at the break. Highland continued to be affected by the Saints pressure and never mounted a serious run in the second half, falling 98-59. Sophomore Roderick Camphor (Baltimore, MD) led the Scotties with 18 points. Sophomore De’Andre Upchurch (Flint, MI) had 14 points in the loss.

“Any team that turns the ball over 32 times and shoots 15% from the arc will never have a chance to win games,” noted Cole. “They jumped on us and we simply backed away from the pressure and played the entire game 40 feet from the basket. Our team toughness and leadership was put to the test and we failed.”

On Saturday evening, the Scotties took on host Garden City. In the first half, the Scotties just couldn’t put the ball in the basket, shooting only 34% from the floor and found themselves trailing the Broncbusters 43-28 at halftime.  It would be all Garden City in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and Highland could only cut a large lead back to the final score of 91-70. Upchurch led the Scotties with 38 points on seven of 14 shooting from three-point land. Freshman Terry Moore (Kansas City) had 11 points.

“Garden City is as talented as any team in the Jayhawk and they used that talent to overwhelm us,” said Cole. “They have a balance to their team, both offensively and defensively, that we do not understand on our team at this moment. I hope we have had enough wake-up calls.”

The Scotties next travel to Region VI D-II foe Hesston College on Wednesday, November 16 for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against the Larks. Highland continues to play on the road with a 2:00 p.m. tip In Lexington, MO, against Wentworth Military College on Saturday, November 19.
