Scottie Baseball Splits at Fort Scott

The Highland Community College baseball team won two of four games over the weekend when they traveled to Fort Scott Community College.

In game one, Fort Scott scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a 2-1 victory over Highland.  Derek Rottinghaus (Seneca) was the tough luck loser in the game, as he pitched six scoreless innings before the Greyhounds’ seventh inning rally.  The Scotties had taken a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Lane (Papillion, NE).  Jordon Oddo (Grain Valley, MO) had two hits for Highland.

In game two, trailing 2-0 going into the fourth inning, the Scotties erupted for five runs, as Justin Paul (Papillion, NE) hit a three run home run, and Jesse Richel (Morris, OK) had a two run single, giving Highland a 5-2 lead.  Joe Mancuso’s (Papillion, NE) two run homer in the fifth inning extended the lead to 7-2.  Tyler Goldsberry (Omaha, NE) pitched a complete game, allowing just two third inning runs.  Goldsberry allowed just three hits in the game, while striking out eight Greyhound batters.

In game three, Tyler Lane had three hits and three runs batted in, and Nick Sarmiento (Saginaw, MI) pitched a complete game, as Highland defeated Fort Scott 6-2.  Lane had an RBI single in the second inning, giving the Scotties a 2-1 lead, then added a two run single in the seventh inning, extending the lead to 6-2.  Sarmiento allowed single runs in the first and fifth innings, while limiting Fort Scott to just three hits, while striking out seven batters.  Jesse Richel had two hits and an RBI, while Justin Paul (Papillion, NE) and Tyler Goldsberry each had RBI hits for Highland.

In game four, Highland committed five errors, which turned into four unearned runs, including the game winner in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Fort Scott defeated the Scotties 6-5 in the series’ final game.  Tyler Goldsberry and Justin Paul had two hits each for the Scotties.
