Yost Gallery, located on the main campus of Highland Community College in Highland, KS, will show My Diary of a Mad World by Derrick Burbul starting September 21 and ending October 25, 2018.

Creating an experimental relationship between words and imagery, Derrick Burbul’s My Diary of a Mad World presents black and white modernist photographs that vary in size; with some images being as large as 40 x 40 inches.  From a distance, the images appear as grainy landscapes of Burbul's travels, but upon closer inspection, the graininess reveals words from Burbul’s own poems, stories and journal entries making up the visual information of each photograph.

Derrick Burbul has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Nebraska at Kearney since 2005. His creative work explores the environment and our relationship to it. His creative interests have explored a wide range of photographic processes from pinhole photography, to tintypes, digital manipulation with Photoshop, and combining historical and contemporary photographic processes. The results have led to inclusion in many exhibitions, including: The National: Best Contemporary Photography 2014, at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art; American Landscapes: Scenes from the Americas, at the Maryland Federation of Art; Folktales and Legends: An Exhibition Without Borders at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygen, Wisconsin; and the LaGrange National XXV Biennial, at the Lamar Dodd Art Center in LaGrange, Georgia.

Yost Gallery is open to the community Monday through Friday, 9am to 3pm with no admission fee. To close the show, Yost Gallery will host a reception on October 17 from 3:30-5:30pm.
