Late Rally Not Enough for Scottie Men, Fall to Pirates

The Highland Community College men’s basketball team fell at home on Wednesday night to the Independence Pirates by the final of 82-77.

The Scotties, 11-11 overall and 5-6 in Jayhawk East play, never led and fell behind by as many as 11 points in the first half. Leading 42-35 at halftime, the Pirates eventually built an 18-point lead with just over six minutes to play. The Scotties quickly rallied and got the game within three points with a minute to play. Twice the Scotties had chances to tie the game, but both attempts fell short and the Pirates took the victory.

The Scotties were led by sophomore De’Andre Upchurch (Flint, MI) with 28 points. Sophomore Roderick Camphor (Baltimore, MD) had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

“We continue to make too many mistakes to beat good teams,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “Defensively, we were terrible all night and this, along with 20 turnovers, equals a loss. We must get better to be a contender in March.”

The Scotties next travel to Kansas City Kansas Community College on Saturday, February 11 for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
