Highland Women Win Over Johnson

In a battle of 10-0 and nationally ranked women’s basketball teams, the Highland Scotties came away with a 59-56 victory over Johnson County in Region and Jayhawk Conference play Saturday at Allen Field House on the HCC campus.

The Scotties led early and used a high pressure defense to take a 27-19 lead into halftime.  “I think both teams knew it was a big game.  We both looked a little nervous early, but I was very pleased with our effort and aggressiveness,” said Highland head coach BJ Smith.

The Highland lead grew to as many as 12, but the Cavaliers chipped away until they finally took a 52-49 lead with 1:49 to play.  “We had some defensive breakdowns in the second half that we didn’t have in the first that let them back in the game,” Smith stated.  At that point Carina Jackson (Sao Paulo, Brazil) hit a 3 pointer to tie the score, and, after free throws on both ends, the Scotties got the ball back down one point with 30 seconds to play.  After two timeouts, the Scotties ran the clock down to 12, Ryan Bowser (Holton) came off a ball screen at the top of the key, and finished a lay-up in traffic to put Highland up one.  Johnson quickly inbounded and pushed the ball with 5.8 second, but Ashley Torres (Puerto Rico) took a charge at half court to get the ball back to the Scotties.

After a timeout Torres hit Jackson over the top for a lay-up to establish the final margin. Highland is now 11-0 with two games remaining before Christmas break.  “This was a big win for us at this point in the season, but there is a lot of season left, and we really need to focus on improving in a lot of areas,” said Smith.
