Highland Women Roll in First National Tournament Game

Seeded second in the NJCAA Division II National Basketball Tournament, the Highland Community College women’s basketball team had no trouble in their opening game of the Tournament, rolling by the outmanned 15th seed, Essex County College, New Jersey.   The Scotties restricted the Wolverines to seven points in the first half and led 38-7 at the break.  Having only eight players to begin with, the Wolverines lost two of those to injury and four more to fouls in the second half, finishing the game with only two players on the floor as the Scotties rolled to an 89-26 victory.

This year’s National Tournament is being held at Kansas Jayhawk Conference member Johnson County Community College in Overland Park.  Playing on a familiar court, the Scotties had five players in double figures, led by reserve Celine Joliceur (Elmont, NY) with 21 points.  Julia Alves (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had 13, Ashleigh Bristol (St. Joseph, MO), a graduate of Riverside High School had 12 off the bench, Bonner Springs native Anna Deegan added 11, and India Johnson – playing in her hometown of Overland Park – chipped in with 10.

The Scotties return to action on Wednesday, March 19, at 8:00 when they take on the number 10 seed, Parkland College from Champaign, IL, which upset the number 7 seed, Lake Michigan College.  The winner of that game will proceed to a Friday at 6:00 tipoff; the loser will play Thursday at 3:00.
