Highland Women Finish Fifth in National Tournament

The Highland Community College women's basketball team concluded another successful season under head coach BJ Smith and assistant Jillian Palan as they finished fifth in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in East Peoria, IL.  The sixth-seeded Scotties again exceeded expectations, winning three of four games at the Tournament with their relentless attacking offense and pressure defense.

Highland started the Tournament on Tuesday night with a win over the eleventh seed, Chesapeake College (MD), by a score of 69-56.  That victory put them up against the host college, Illinois Central, which was the third seed in the Tournament.  This game was reminiscent of the Scotties versus fellow Jayhawk Conference foe Johnson County, who Highland defeated by a single point in the Region VI Championship game to advance to the National Tournament.  In a back and forth struggle, ICC finally downed the Scotties, 55-59.  The narrow defeat took Highland out of the Championship bracket in the double elimination format of the National Tournament, but served to spur the Scotties to push even harder in their next games.

The Scotties used that incentive to blister their next opponent, tenth seeded Rhode Island, 71-47.  That win put Highland in the position to exceed its seeding against the ninth seed, Monroe College (N.Y.), who took the number one seed to the wire before dropping into the non-Championship bracket.  Highland downed Monroe 72-57 for the fifth place slot and a 30-win season for the Scotties.  For her play during the week, Scottie sophomore TaMiya Green (Lawrence) was named to the National All-Tournament Team.
