Highland Women Do Well at KU Track

After finishing second to Coffeyville at the Scottie Classic home meet, the Highland Community College women’s track team traveled to the University of Kansas for the Division I NJCAA Region VI Championship/KJCAA Conference Meet on Friday, February 21.

Leading the way for the Scottie women were Krystal Corhn (Topeka), Crystal Hoard Randolph), and Mandy Wilson (Auburn), all sophomores.  Wilson captured the Region and Conference championship in the 600 meter for the second year in a row with a time of 1:41.46. She also set a new Highland record in the 500 meter at 1:19.23 during the season. Hoard, who was trying a new event for the season, won the Conference title in the 1000 meter and placed 5th in the Region with a time of 3:16.93. In the 60 meter, Corhn, who also plays on the Scottie basketball team, ran her first and only meet of the season and captured 3rd place in the Conference and Region with a time of 7.74, earning her a trip to the National Meet.

Taylor Smith-Brown (Highland) did well in the high jump with a 3rd place finish in the Conference and 6th in the Region. In the mile run, Rebecca Geib (Highland) finished 4th in the Conference and 6th in the Region, running her fastest time of the season.

Others contributing to the Scottie effort were Jazmine Miller (Richmond, VA), 6th in the Conference in both the 60 hurdles and 400 meter. In the 400 meter Miller ran a season best time of 1:02.76.  Annie Ross (Olsburg) ran a season best time of 1:03.88 also in the 400, placing 8th in the Conference, and Bailey Munger (St. Joseph, MO) placed 6th in the Conference in the high jump. The team overall placed 5th in the Conference and 12th in the Region.

The next meet for the women will be the NJCAA Division I National Championships in New York at the historic Amory, home of the Melrose Games, on March 7-8. Monroe College is hosting the meet. Those qualifying are Mandy Wilson in the 600 meter; Crystal Hoard, 1000 meter; Jazmine Miller, 60 hurdles; and Krystal Corhn, 60 meter dash.

The team will now start preparing for the outdoor season with their first meet on March 18 at Park University.
