Highland Volleyball Earns Academic Honor

The Highland Community College volleyball team received yet another academic award for their excellence in the classroom.  They were recently awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)Team Academic Award for the 2012-2013 school year.  The Scottie volleyball team earned a 3.63 overall gpa this past academic year which ranked them 2nd in the NJCAA.  This is the third straight year that the team has been awarded this prestigious honor under Coach Diana Gaddis, following a tradition that had been set in place by the Highland volleyball program under Coach Glenna Batchelder who will be enshrined in the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame this month.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

"Excellence doesn't happen by accident, either on the court or in the classroom," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "It takes consistent preparation, relentless effort, and determined leadership. A full year of academic achievement, by an entire team of individual students, is a remarkable achievement.  What better way to start a new season than with a celebration of an award so emblematic of all that is necessary for sustained success."  Gaddis is looking to build on that success as her Scottie squad is already on campus and hard at work preparing for the upcoming season.  The Scotties will warm up against previous Scottie players at Alumni Games on August 17 and then get the season started at a tournament in Iowa on August 23.
