Highland Student Support Services Celebrates National TRIO Day

Student Support Services (SSS) at Highland Community College joined with their colleagues around the country in celebrating National TRIO Day on February 27.  National TRIO Day is a day of celebration, reflection, action, and awareness of the Federal TRIO programs that help disadvantaged students successfully navigate and graduate from college.

Today, more than 1,000 colleges, universities, and community agencies host more than 2,700 TRIO projects that serve approximately 840,000 young people and adults.

The original three TRIO programs to address cultural and social barriers included Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services. Together, this “trio” of federally-funded programs encouraged access to higher education for underprivileged students and adults. There are now eight federally-funded programs that exist across the nation.

Are TRIO programs effective? Yes, the estimated 2.2 million students have graduated from college with the support and assistance of a TRIO program and growth of programs beyond the original three are a testament to the programs’ value.

Highland’s SSS Director, Lisa Parsons, was pleased to learn that the College’s Student Support Services program was one of the selected applicants that was awarded a grant for the upcoming 2015-2020 cycle. HCC’s Student Support Services program serves 140 students.  It provides assistance in tutoring, financial counseling, career counseling, college visits, cultural events, workshops, and academic support. SSS students receive direct support to begin and stay in college.

The SSS program held a come and go on Friday, February 26, for the SSS students to celebrate their achievements and the success of the College’s program and TRIO as a whole.
