After an arduous effort with the U.S. Geological Survey, Highland Community College Klinefelter Farm manager Wendell Ganstrom was successful in having the creek that runs through the College’s Klinefelter Farm east of Hiawatha officially designated as Klinefelter Creek by the United States Board on Geographic Names. As noted in the letter of notification, that creek was formerly listed as “an unnamed stream in Brown County”.
The official notation in the Geographic Names repository includes the history of the Klinefelter Farm as a family farm and recognizes that John Klinefelter donated the property to the College. Ganstrom has secured funding from local donors for the purchase of two steel bridges that will span the newly designated creek and will be part of the trail system Ganstrom created for walkers and cross country runners. When in place, the College plans to hold a small ceremony recognizing the donors, naming those bridges, and celebrating the naming of the Creek.
