Highland BPA Students Attend State Conference in Wichita

Administrative Assistant and Engineering Graphic Technology students from the Highland Community College Technical Center (HCCTC) attended the Business Professionals of America (BPA) State Leadership Conference February 18 - 20, 2016 in Wichita. HCCTC Chapter members who attended were: Jacklynn Clary (Troy), JoLynn Grant (Hiawatha), Kaitlyn Logan (Pleasant Ridge), Elizabeth Iles-Lucius (Atchison), Jessica Stirton (Horton), Abigail Vaught (Horton), and Advisor/Business Instructor Carrie Miller.  

Students tested their knowledge in many different business-related areas. Student placings include: Administrative Support Team 1st Clary, Iles-Lucius, and Vaught); Banking and Finance 1st (Grant); Basic Office Systems and Procedures 1st (Iles-Lucius); Database Applications 1st (Clary); Fundamental Desktop Publishing 1st (Vaught), 3rd (Logan) and 6th (Stirton); Fundamental Word Processing 1st (Vaught); Integrated Office Applications 1st (Clary); Intermediate Word Processing 1st (Iles-Lucius). Jacklynn Clary, Elizabeth Iles-Lucius, and Abigail Vaught also achieved Statesman Recognition for Business Professionals of America’s Torch Awards Program. Students complete activities in the seven Torch categories – Leadership; Service; Cooperation; Knowledge; Friendship; Love, Hope, and Faith; and Patriotism.

Students who placed first in their events will be traveling to Boston, MA, to attend BPA’s 50th National Leadership Conference, “This is Our Time,” May 5-9, 2016. They will join over 5,000 students from across the nation to participate in national level business skills competitions. BPA is a national organization for high school & college students preparing for careers in business and information technology. The organization’s activities and programs complement classroom instruction by giving students practical experience through application of the skills learned at school. BPA is contributing to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills.
