Highland Baseball Wins Three of Four at Cloud County

The Highland Community College baseball team traveled recently to Concordia where it won three out of four games in the Cloud County Tournament.

On Friday, February 21, in game one versus host Cloud County, Taylor Hendrick (Springfield, MO) pitched a complete game, and Justin Paul (Omaha, NE) hit a three run home run to cap a four-run first inning as the Scotties defeated the Thunderbirds 8-1.

Hendrick allowed only a first inning unearned run and gave up only three hits over his seven innings of work.  Kasey Clark’s (St. Marys) sacrifice fly in the third inning extended the lead to 5-1, and Aaron Seele’s (Silver Lake) RBI single in the fourth inning made the score 6-1.  Highland added two more runs in the fifth inning on a error and a RBI single by Dakota Woods (Clarinda, IA).  After working out of a third inning jam with a runner on second and third, Hendrick allowed only one base runner over the last four innings.

In the nightcap game, DII eighth-ranked North Iowa Community College scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and held on for a 4-2 win over the Scotties.

North Iowa scored single runs in the first and third innings and held a 2-0 lead going into the top of the fifth inning.  Highland finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning on a one out double by Seele and back-to-back two-out doubles by Justin Paul and Evan Smith (Wichita) to tie the game at 2-2.  The Scotties then tried to rally in the top of the seventh inning, but left two men on base to end the game.  Highland also left base runners on base in each of the first three innings.  Seele, Sam Brooks (Bay City, MI), and Smith each had two hits in the game.

Justin Paul suffered the loss, pitching five and two-third innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits, while striking out eight batters.

On Saturday, February 22, in the opening game, Highland again faced North Iowa.  The Scotties exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open a scoreless game,  and Skylar Barnes (Basehor) pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout, while striking out eight batters as Highland took an 8-0 victory.

Seann Baker’s (Oak Grove, MO) double plated the first run in the big fourth inning, which was followed by a pinch hit two run single by Jeremy Wagner (Tonganoxie).  Tyler Lane (Papillion, NE) plated a run on a fielder’s choice. After Seele singled, Brooks grounded out, scoring Lane.  Justin Paul then tripled home Seele, giving HCC a 6-0 lead.

The Scotties added two more runs in the fifth inning on a RBI triple by Tyler Lane (Papillion, NE) who was singled home by Seel, giving Highland the 8-0 advantage.

In the final game of the Tournament, the Scotties scored two runs in the second inning, three runs in the third inning, and four runs in the fourth inning, in a 9-1 win over Cloud County.  Six different Highland batters had RBI hits in the game.  Dakota Woods (Clarinda, IA) had two hits and two RBIs, while Paul, Smith, and Clark each had two hits and one RBI.

Jarrod Byous (St. Joseph, MO) picked up the win on the mound, pitching four solid innings in relief, allowing only an unearned run in the sixth inning, after starter Tyler Rice (Blue Springs, MO) had to leave the game after having pitched two scoreless innings.   Clayton Tiffany (St. Joseph, MO) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing two hits to start the inning, but got out of the inning, striking out two of the last three batters.

HCC is now 5-3 on the season, and will open Conference play on Thursday, February 27, at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City.
