The Highland Community College baseball team opened its season by traveling to Oklahoma for better weather. Neither the weather nor the opponent cooperated as Carl Albert Community College took advantage of Highland’s miscues in sweeping a four game series from the Scotties by scores of 11-7, 7-6, 9-6, and 14-8.
“We had the lead late in every game, but mental and physical errors defensively, coupled with walks, opened the door for big innings for Carl Albert that proved to be the difference in the series,” commented head coach Rick Eberly.
“I thought we did some good things both offensively and defensively, and our starting pitching was pretty good, but we left over thirty base runners on base in the four games, and we have to do a better job of getting outs and throwing strikes. These are all fixable things, and I am very confident we will get them fixed,” added Eberly.
James Park (Toronto, Ontario) and Jaylen Jenkins (Topeka) led the Scotties offensively, as Park was eight for twelve with two home runs, and nine RBIs, and Jenkins was seven for thirteen with a double, triple, and four RBIs.
Highland will travel to Cloud County Community College for a double header Friday, February 20, as weather has cancelled regularly scheduled games Saturday and Sunday at Highland.
