Highland Baseball Splits with Independence

The Highland Community College baseball team rallied twice in game one and defeated Independence Community College 10-9 in nine innings before falling to the Pirates 8-2 in game two.

In game one, Andrew Standish’s (Millard, NE) RBI single capped a two out, nobody on, four run rally as the Scotties came from behind twice to defeat Independence 10-9 in extra innings.  The big inning started with a two out walk, followed by an error.  Jesse Richel (Morris, OK) then doubled, scoring both runners, narrowing the deficit to 9-8.  Tyler Goldsberry (Omaha, NE) followed with another double to plate Richel to tie the game at 9-.  A walk to Cameron Kirk (Pawhuska, OK) put runners at first and second, setting the stage for Standish’s game winning hit.

Highland had rallied earlier in the game, as the Scotties trailed 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but took advantage of an error and two walks to score four runs and send the game into extra innings.  Justin Paul (Papillion, NE), Alex Head (Topeka), Craig Hill (Morris, OK), and Jordan Oddo (Grain Valley, MO) all had RBIs in the inning.  Tyler Goldsberry, Andrew Standish, Justin Paul, and Joe Mancuso (Papillion, NE) all had two hits in the game.

In game two, Independence scored three unearned runs in the first inning, then added four runs in the fourth inning, and went on to an 8-2 win over HCC.  Tyler Lane (Papillion, NE) had an RBI double in the first inning and Alex Head had an RBI ground out in the sixth inning for the Scotties’ only runs.

Highland took three of the four games from the Pirates, and have won seven of their last ten games in Conference play.  The Scotties are 10-10 in Conference and 12-15 overall after starting the season with a 2-8 record.  They will resume Conference play Saturday, April 6, and Sunday, April 7, as they travel to Neosho County Community College for a four game series.
