Highland Baseball Drops Three to Cowley

Jayhawk league leader Cowley County came back after losing game one of a four game series to win the last three games over Highland Community College.  The wins push Cowley County to 10-2 in league play, while the Scotties drop to 4-8.

In game one, Jerad Hawkins (Wathena) pitched a complete game shut-out, as the Scotties defense turned five double plays, and Jeremy Monty’s (Colorado Springs, CO) single in the bottom of the fifth inning provided the game’s only run, as HCC defeated Cowley County 1-0.  Hawkins allowed only four hits, while striking out five batters.

In game two Cowley County scored two runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie, and then shut the Scotties down in the bottom of the inning to secure a 5-3 win.  The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but the Scotties answered back in the bottom half on an RBI bunt single by Tyler Goldsberry (Papillion, NE), followed by a two run home run by Andrew Standish (Omaha, NE) to tie the game at 3-3.  Goldsberry and Jeremy Monty had two hits in the game.  Ethan DeVader (St. Marys) pitched four scoreless innings before two errors by the Scotties opened the door for the three run fifth inning.  Derek Rottinghaus (Seneca, KS) took the loss in relief.

On Sunday, the Scotties came out sluggish and Cowley County took advantage of their uninspired play, as HCC committed five errors and the Tigers swept the double header 9-2 and 6-0.

In game one, Cowley County scored six runs in the top of the third inning off starter Nick Sarmiento (Saginaw, MI).  The big inning started with two walks and a throwing error on a bunt, followed by three singles and a two run home run before the Scotties could get the third out.  The Tigers added a run in the fourth inning, and two more in the seventh inning.  The Scotties only runs came on back to back doubles by Tyler Goldsberry and Andrew Standish in the fourth inning and a solo home run by Standish in the sixth inning.

In game two, Cowley County scored two runs in each of the third, fourth, and seventh innings, and the Scotties’ offense was limited to five hits, as the Tigers shut out HCC in the series final game 6-0.

The Scotties fall to 13-11 over-all, and will be back in action Thursday, March 22, when they travel to Baker University, before starting a four game series at Coffeyville Community College on Saturday, March 24, and Sunday, March 25.
