Dodge City Uses Big Fourth Quarter to Beat Scotties

The Highland Community College football team couldn’t keep the Dodge City Conquistadors out of the end zone in the final period and fell at home by the final of 41-35 on Saturday, September 7.

The Scotties, 1-2 overall and 1-1 in Jayhawk Conference play, went into the final quarter of play on Saturday afternoon tied with the Conqs 28-28. Dodge City moved the ball with ease and posted back-to-back touchdowns to take a commanding 41-28 lead.  Highland started a comeback and scored late in the quarter to make it 41-35.  The Scottie defense stood tall with a crucial stop, giving the offense one last chance. With time running out, a Scottie wide receiver got behind the Dodge City secondary, and it looked as if Highland would pull off a miraculous comeback. However, the fourth down pass was dropped, turning the ball over to the Conquistadors, essentially ending the ballgame.

The Scottie offense effectively moved the ball all day against a tough Dodge City defense.  Freshman quarterback Brandon Bergeron (Lafayette, LA) completed 23 of 38 passes for 360 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Durwin Jones (Houston, TX) caught four passes for 153 yards, three receptions were for touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Melvin McAdams (Houston, TX) also had a big day, catching nine passes for 130 yards and one score.

The Scottie ground game, hampered in recent weeks by injuries, managed 93 total rushing yards on 30 carries. Freshman running back Jordan Ward (Olathe) led Highland with 43 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries.

Highland’s defensive unit had a forgettable afternoon, with numerous missed tackles throughout the game. Sophomore safety Patrick Martin (Greenville, S.C.) led the way with eight total tackles, including five solo and one for loss. Sophomore defensive tackles Marcus Smith (Wadesboro, N.C.) and Glen Antoine (Round Rock, TX) had nine and eight tackles respectively.

The Scotties next host the Midland University junior varsity on Sunday, September 15 for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at Kessinger Field.
