Cowley Sweeps Scotties

Cowley College used the big inning each time in taking four games from Highland Community College in the Conference opener for both teams.

In game one, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning where they took advantage of a two-out error to score six runs, five of which came on five straight hits after the error to break the game open and take a 7-0 lead.  They then added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 10-0 victory.  Highland was limited to just three hits in the game.

Game two was much like game one.  With the score 2-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Cowley scored two runs to take a 4-2 lead, then took advantage of three walks and an error to score five runs in the sixth inning on just two hits on their way to a 11-4 win.  Justin Paul (Omaha, NE) had two hits and two RBIs for Highland.  Tyler Lane (Papillion, NE), Sam Brooks (Bay City, MI), and Dakota Woods (Clarinda, IA) also had two hits each for Highland.

Friday, February 28, game three saw Cowley jump to a 7-2 lead after three innings, as they used a fifteen hit attack to score in six of the seven innings to defeat the Scotties 12-5.  Kasey Clark (St. Marys) and Dakota Woods (Clarinda, IA) each had two hits and an RBI for Highland.

In the final game of the series, Cowley scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie, then added two more runs in the eighth inning to put the game away as they finished the series with a 5-1 win.  Highland had scoring opportunities, with runners in scoring position in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings, but was unable to come up with key hits.  Brett Norris (Atchison) pitched six strong innings for the Scotties, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out four batters.  Dakota Woods drove home the only Highland run in the third inning.

The Scotties drop to 5-7 on the season, and 0-4 in Conference play.  They will travel to Coffeyville on Friday, March 7, and then host the Ravens in Sabetha on Sunday, March 9.
