Business Students Will Travel to Washington, D.C. to Participate in the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conferencepublished February 27, 2020
Business technology and engineering graphic technology students from the Highland Community College Technical Center (HCCTC) attended the Business Professionals of America (BPA) State Leadership Conference February 20-22 in Wichita, Kansas.
“Students were tested in different business-related areas and were able to take the skills they build in coursework to the next level” noted Carrie Miller BPA Advisor and Instructor of Business at HCCTC.
HCCTC Chapter members in attendance included Madelyn Bruning (Everest), Marsha Beurman (Oskaloosa), Alanda Jamvold (Troy), Hannah McCaully (Leavenworth), Emily Linck (Atchison), Jennifer Lowe (Horton), and BPA Advisor, Carrie Miller.
Student placings include: Administrative Support Team 1st (Beurman, Bruning, Jamvold, McCaully); Banking and Finance 1st (Bruning); Fundamental Desktop Publishing 2nd (McCaully), 4th (Linck); Basic Office Systems and Procedures 1st (Beurman), 2nd (Lowe); Fundamental Word Processing 1st (Jamvold); Intermediate Word Processing 1st(Bruning).
Beurman and Jamvold also received Statesman Torch Awards. A Statesman is defined as "one who is a leader in the promotion of the public good and in national affairs." The BPA Torch Awards Program is designed to promote professionalism and leadership in both career development and personal growth. Students complete activities in the seven Torch categories; leadership, service, cooperation, knowledge, friendship, love, hope, faith, and patriotism.
Students that placed first in their events will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to attend BPA’s National Leadership Conference, “Capitalize Your Future,” May 6-10. They will join thousands of students from across the nation to participate in national level business skills competitions. BPA is an innovator in Career and Technical Education, providing members with opportunities for growth through education, competition, community service and personal development.
With 45,000 members in over 1,800 chapters across 25 states and Puerto Rico, BPA is a co-curricular organization for high school & college students that supports business and information technology educators by offering co-curricular exercises based on national standards. The organization’s activities and programs complement classroom instruction by giving students practical experience through the application of the skills learned at school. BPA is contributing to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills.
