Last weekend, Highland Community College hosted the oldest All-Star games in the state of Kansas. The 38th Annual Northeast Kansas All-Star Games featured 66 area high school seniors competing in volleyball and women’s and men’s basketball.
It was a highly competitive weekend filled with action-packed fun and excitement from start to finish. On Saturday, Volleyball played 5 sets with the navy team earning the victory. On Sunday, the women’s basketball contest was won by the navy team with a 70-69 win over the gold. A high-scoring game for men’s basketball resulted in a gold team win over the navy with a final score of 104-78.
VOLLEYBALL
Gold Coaches: Cindy Osterhause (Centralia High School) & Mollie Hiltibrand (Centralia High School)
Gold Leaders: Taylor Weishaar (Riverside) led the gold team with 16 kills and 3 blocks. Maggie Toerber (Valley Heights) contributed heavily to the offense with 11 kills. Gwyn Noll (Maur Hill) had a great day with 20 assists and 6 digs. Clara Johnson (JCN) had a solid presence with 13 assists and 3 blocks. Camryn Duryea (Sabetha) led the defense with 11 digs while Victoria Kuckelman (Centralia) was close behind with 9. Carley Bilderback (ACCHS) led the team in aces with 3.
Navy Coaches: Kristel Bontrager (Holton High School) & Alexis Dalinghaus (Frankfort High School)
Navy Leaders: Emily Langley (JCN) led the way with 13 kills and 5 digs. Brenna Smith (St. Marys) contributed 10 kills and 4 digs. Alexis Mesalle (Oskaloosa) had 10 kills and 3 blocks. Evelyn Smith (JCN) had a match high 5 blocks while Alexis Dalinghaus (Frankfort) was the assist leader with 25. Olivia Scott (Jeff West) was a defensive threat contributing 12 digs with Tessa Lohse (Hanover) right behind her with 11.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Gold: 69
Navy: 70
Gold Coaches: Brian Ebert (Frankfort High School) & Vicki Adams (Frankfort High School)
Gold Leaders: Kaylin Noonan (Burlingame) lead the team scoring 17 points, McKinley Kruger (Silver Lake) scored 14 points and Taylor Weishaar (Riverside) came in close scoring 13 points in the game. Kaylin Noonan also had 4 assists and McKinley Kruger had 3.
Navy Coaches: Craig Burnes (Riverside High School), Holly Dodson (Riverside High School) & Bruce Starks (Riverside High School)
Navy Leaders: Navy point team leaders were Makenzie McDaniel (Silver Lake) with 21 and Taylor Damme (Perry-Lecompton) with 19. Emma Hardwick (Frankfort) lead the team with 5 assists. Abby O’Grady (Riverside) came in second in assists with 4 and Halle Studer (Riverside) was next with 3.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Gold: 104
Navy: 78
Gold Coaches: Cory Noll (Jefferson County North High School) & Jeff Schneider (Jefferson County North High School)
Gold Leaders: The gold team scoring was led by Trey Carter (Atchison) who had total 15 points. A close second was Carson McAfee (Jefferson County North) with 14 points and Jeter Purdy (Atchison) with 13 points. The navy team had a four-way tie with 3 assists each by Christian McAfee (Sabetha), Marcus Bauman (Sabetha), Trey Carter and Carson McAfee.
Navy Coaches: Jonathan Rodvelt (Troy High School) & David Losey (Horton High School)
Navy Leaders: Scoring leaders for the navy were Joey Henderson (Concordia) with 18 points, Christian Etherton (Troy) with 16 and Gannon Becker (Horton) putting 10 points on the board. The navy team was led in assists by Percy Duncan (Riverside) and Henderson both with 3.
