Job Description:

The Ottawa Police Department is seeking highly motivated applicants for the position of Police Officer who are committed to a long career with our department. The Ottawa Police Department is a modern, highly committed CALEA accredited department with an authorized strength of 31 officers. The Department serves a population of approximately 13,000 residents covering 12 square miles. The city has three major highways intersecting in Ottawa, Interstate 35, US 59 Highway and Kansas 68 Highway. Officers hired, unless already certified, attend the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center for 14 weeks. Upon graduation officers complete an 11-week Field Training Officer Program. The Department has three divisions: Patrol, Investigations and Support Services. The Patrol Division is staffed by 1 Commander, 4 Sergeants and up to 14 Police Officers. There are four patrol shifts that operate on a 12-hour rotation from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for day shift and 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. for night shift. Using the 12-hour shifts, officers have two weekends off each month, one a four-day weekend and the other a three-day weekend. Detectives are assigned through a competitive lateral-transfer process and normally work Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are subject to call out after work hours. Advancement/promotion opportunities include Master Police Officer, Detective, Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Detective, Drug Enforcement Unit Detective, DARE Instructor, STAR Team (Special Tactics and Rescue), Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief of Police and Chief of Police. Some additional duties after specialized training include Hostage K9 Handler, Drug Recognition Expert, Advanced Accident Investigations, sUAS Pilot, Bike Patrol and Crisis Intervention Team. The Law Enforcement Center was built in 2003 and has a full-service fitness room including locker rooms, free weights, functional fitness, treadmills, and mat area. Patrol cars are equipped with laptop computers, moving and stationary radar, Tire Deflation Devices, Patrol Rifles, Less Lethal Weapons, PBT, window tint meter, traffic cones, first aid kit, in-car and body worn digital video camera and a digital camera for scene photos. The department also has a modern firearms range. The range has a combat course range, steel plate range and a stationary target range out to 200 yards, and is equipped for moving targets, elevated platform, shooting from vehicles, and night shooting. Officers are issued all equipment. Uniforms are dry cleaned with pick-up and drop in the Law Enforcement Center. Currently, officers carry the Glock G-17 Gen. 4 9mm handgun, Taser X-2, BOLA Wrap, expandable baton, OC spray, handcuffs, and flashlight. Each officer is issued an outer-vest carrier with all pouches supplied, including tourniquets. The position is located in northeast Kansas near Wamego with travel required to various trial locations throughout the state. Potential duties will include: -Plot establishment: flagging, pesticide mixing and application, soil sampling, irrigation. -Data collection: stand counts, crop response, weed/insect/disease control evaluations, data entry into computer systems. -Plot tour preparation and support. -Machinery operation: planting, spraying, mowing, harvesting, equipment maintenance, assist with loading and hauling equipment to research sites.

Required Skills:

The candidate must be able to work independently or as part of a team and must be able to physically perform field duties (including lifting up to 50 lbs.) under highly variable conditions. Working conditions often include exposure to potential allergens including dust and pollen. Good communication and interpersonal skills together with the ability to operate in a safe and efficient manner is required. May operate farm equipment as part of the job.
