Pre-Professional Programs

Pre-Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a system of mechanical therapeutics focused on how the nervous system affects overall health and wellness.  A chiropractor adjusts the spinal column and other parts of the body to prevent disease and correct problems.  The chiropractor will examine and treat patients in the office, advise them as to diet and exercise, use heat and therapy treatment, x-ray, and other medical equipment.  Successful completion of two years of college prior to admission to chiropractic college is required.

Pre-Dental Hygiene

Pre-Dental Hygiene is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Dental hygienists perform a variety of clinical and instructional duties in preventive dental health, such as preparing solutions and mixes, cleaning and polishing teeth, developing x-rays, and assisting in the treatment of patients.

Pre-Dentistry

Pre-Dentistry is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Dentists diagnose and treat diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums.  Dentists can work in general practice or specialize in areas such as orthodontics, periodontics, pedodontics, or oral surgery.

Pre-Engineering

Pre-Engineering is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree.  Engineers apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to the solution of practical or technical problems.  Note that MAT 104 College Algebra and MAT 105 Trigonometry must be taken prior to starting this program in order to complete course work in two years.  The beginning course in mathematics for this curriculum is Calculus I.

Pre-Forestry

Pre-Forestry is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree.  This program prepares students for study in a wide range of conservation areas, including the care, conservation, and economic aspects of forest resources.  Forestry often focuses on production, wood utilization and technology, range management, pulp and paper production, and logging.  Employment opportunities are usually found in federal, state, or county civil service agencies.

Pre-Nursing

Pre-Nursing is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a degree in nursing.  Students should also consult the program requirements and suggested courses of the nursing school they plan to attend.  Nurses provide general medical care and treatment to patients in clinics, health centers, or public health agencies. Nurses assist with physical examinations and preventive health measures, order diagnostic tests, record findings, discuss cases with physicians and other health professionals, and submit health care plans and goals for the patient.

Pre-Optometry

Pre-Optometry is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a degree in optometry.  Students should also consult the program requirements and suggested courses of the school of optometry they plan to attend.  Optometrists identify vision problems and possible disease or other abnormalities of the eyes and also prescribe corrective procedures.

Pre-Pharmacy is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a degree in pharmacy.  Students should also consult the program requirements and suggested courses of the school of pharmacy they plan to attend.  Pharmacists compound and dispense medication prescribed by authorized medical practitioners.

Pre-Physical Therapy

Pre-Physical Therapy is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree.  Students should also consult the program requirements and suggested courses of the physical therapy school they plan to attend.  Physical therapists plan, organize, and direct therapeutic programs for people whose ability to function is impaired by disease or injury.

Pre-Respiratory Therapy

Pre-Respiratory Therapy is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a degree in respiratory therapy.  Students should also consult the program requirements and suggested courses of the respiratory therapy school they plan to attend.  Respiratory therapists treat patients with breathing problems or who are taking medications by inhalation.

Pre-Veterinary Medicine

Pre-Veterinary Medicine is a transfer program for students who plan to complete an associate in science degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Students should also consult the program requirements and suggested courses of the veterinary school they plan to attend.  Veterinarians diagnose, treat, control, and prevent diseases and injuries in animals.  They advise on the feeding, care, and breeding of animals and may work in general practice or a specialty.
