Meet the Staff
Title: Student Support Services Director
Andrea Keller is the Director of Student Support Services (SSS). She begins her third year as SSS Director after having served as the SSS Math Specialist for two years. Andrea has worked at HCC for 11 years, serving as the head volleyball coach as well as admissions representative prior to working for SSS. She currently serves as the Director of Advising as well. Andrea received her Bachelor of Science in Education and her Master of Science in Higher Education Leadership, both from Northwest Missouri State University.
Andrea, an alumn of HCC, lives in Highland with her husband and 3 children.
Title: Student Support Services Retention Coordinator
Audrey Denton is the Retention Coordinator for Student Support Services. Audrey earned an Associate of Arts degree from HCC, a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology from Missouri Western and a Master's in Liberal Arts from Baker University. Audrey has over 10 years of experience in higher education in administration and as adjunct faculty. She most recently worked at Park University as the Assistant Director of the Park Student Success Center.
Audrey and her husband Christopher have a daughter and son.
Title: Student Support Services Transfer Advisor
Kim Bechtold is the Transfer Advisor for Student Support Services. Kim attended Highland Community College then transferred to Northwest Missouri State University where she received her Bachelor’s of Science in Merchandising. Since graduating from Northwest she has worked as a Formica Sales Rep and an Enrollment Advisor at Baker University.
Kim is returning back to Highland after living in the Kansas City area for the last 6 years. Kim, her husband Josh and son Mason love living out in the country again and having friends and family close by.

Title: Administrative Assistant
Bethany Smith is in her first year as the SSS Administrative Assistant. Bethany attended Kansas State University before transferring to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with an emphasis in Directing and Management. She is excited to be working in an educational environment after recently working in customer service.
Bethany grew up in Douglass, KS, and is currently living in Falls City, NE. She is happy to be working in her native Kansas again as it feels a bit like a homecoming. In her spare time Bethany enjoys reading, traveling, experiencing new things, and playing with her cats, Ness and Sega.
Title: SSS Math Specialist
Shelley Smith is one of the Math Specialists for Student Support Services. Shelley graduated from Washburn University with degrees in Mathematics and Computer Information Science. After graduating, Shelley worked as a computer programmer/analyst for 10 years, before becoming an adjunct instructor in 2004 for HCC and Washburn University.
Shelley lives in Sabetha with her husband and three daughters. Most of her free time is spent attending one of her daughters’ many activities, playing with her two dogs and reading.
Title: SSS Math Specialist/Math Instructor
Michelle Hurn is one of the math specialists for Student Support Services (SSS). She has served in several capacities at HCC since she started in 1995. At the beginning she taught beginning algebra as an adjunct instructor and then moved into the math specialist position for the former HCC SSS program. For many years Michelle has worked as a full time math instructor on campus.
Michelle’s education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and economics from Emporia State University. After completing her Bachelor’s degree she continued her education and became certified to teach middle and high school mathematics in Kansas.
In her free time Michelle reads, spends time with her husband and two children, and attends school functions.
