Scottie Men Fall at Fort Scott

The Highland Community College men’s basketball team suffered their first loss of the 2012-13 season on the road to the Fort Scott Greyhounds by a final of 81-76.

The #8 ranked Scotties, 4-1 overall and 0-1 in Jayhawk Eastern Conference play, just could not find any rhythm the entire night. Playing without starting center LA Pomlee (Davenport, IA) due to a mandatory one game suspension as a result of receiving two technical fouls the previous game, the Scotties lacked a strong rebounding presence in the paint. Despite poor shooting and a lack of defensive energy, the Scotties took a 33-31 lead into halftime. In the second half, their cold shooting continued, but Highland continued to hold a slim lead until the four minute mark when the Greyhounds came alive and pulled away.

Highland was led by freshman Martell Collins (Milwaukee, WI) with 19 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Kris Smith (Beaumont, TX) knocked down 17 points while fellow freshman Jelani Neely (Chicago, IL) contributed with 16 points.

“Some of the evils that go with winning were exposed in this game,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We have lacked intensity and focus on guarding the ball, being physical rebounders, and executing our offensive game plan the past couple of weeks. It caught up to us against Fort Scott. Hopefully this loss will wake us up.”

The Scotties next travel to Garden City Community College for their Thanksgiving Classic on November 23-24. On Friday, Nov. 23, the Scotties play Garden City at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 24, the Scotties play Colby Community College at 3:30 p.m.
