Highland Men’s Cross Country Opens Season

The men’s cross country team at Highland Community College opened up the 2015 season by competing at the nine-team Allen Community College Duals on Friday, August 28.  The men finished the night with six wins and two losses, and 3rd place overall on the wet and muddy course on the Allen campus. The University of St Mary, #11 nationally-ranked NAIA college, won the meet. 

The Highland men were led by Jorge Guerrero (San Antonio, TX) an 8th overall place, Derrick Zaldivar (Topeka) 16th, Jovany Hernandez (South Houston, TX) 19th, and John Brunner (Elbing) 20th.  The Scottie men’s cross country team competed next on September 4th at the Augustana Twilight Classic under the lights in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. 

The Twilight Classic was a meet that had 25 teams competing and over 300 runners, with some top ranked NCAA Division II teams, and NJCAA Defending National Champion Iowa Central.  The Highland men finished in 12 place, in the meet won by the University of Nebraska.   Freshman Jorge Guerrero (San Antonio, TX), led the Scotties for the second straight meet, finishing in 67th place, followed by freshman Jovany Hernandez (South Houston, TX), sophomore Derrick Zaldivar (Topeka), freshman Rick Arellano (Edinburg, TX), and freshman John Brunner (Elbing).  The Scottie men compete next at the Missouri Southern Stampede, Saturday, September 19th at 9:00 am in Joplin, MO.
