Highland Baseball Splits with #5 Neosho

The Highland Community College baseball team traveled to Chanute to take on nationally fifth ranked Neosho County Community College before hosting the Panthers a day later.  Neosho used two big innings in sweeping Highland in Conference play in the games played in Chanute, scoring eleven first-inning runs in game one for a 12-1 victory.  Then Neosho scored six fourth- inning runs in game two to erase a 5-2 deficit on their way to an 11-6 win.

In game one, Highland took a 1-0 lead on a Justin Paul (Omaha, NE) single in the top of the first inning.  The lead didn’t last long, as Neosho started the bottom of the inning with seven straight hits, followed by two walks on their way to an 11-1 lead after one inning and went on to a 12-1 win.

In game two, the Scotties jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Sam Brooks (Bay City, MI).  Neosho scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game.  Highland quickly took the lead back in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs as Jaylen Jenkins (Topeka) had a two-run single and Royce Behar (Ponca City, OK) had an RBI double, giving Highland a 5-2 lead.  After a scoreless fourth inning, the Panthers exploded for six runs on six hits, including three doubles and a home run to take a 9-5 lead.  Highland scored a single run in the eighth inning to make the score 9-6, but a two run home run in the bottom of the inning put the game out of reach as Neosho County took the win 11-6.

Returning home to host the Panthers, Taylor Hendrick (Springfield, MO) pitched six and one third innings and Justin Paul hit a two-run home run and picked up the save as the Scotties defeated Neosho County 6-3 in game one of the double header.  Hendrick allowed only three runs on six hits in picking up his third win of the year.  With the game tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the third inning, Highland scored three runs as Dakota Woods (Clarinda, IA) hit an RBI double which was followed by Paul’s home run, giving the Scotties a 4-1 lead.  Neosho hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the sixth inning to close the lead to 4-3, but Royce Behar’s two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Highland a three run lead entering the top of the seventh inning.  Paul came in to retire the next two batters on a strikeout and a ground out to preserve the win.  In game two, Neosho County pounded out seventeen hits, including three home runs, as they defeated Highland 16-3.
