HCC Soils Class Attends Local Cover Crop Workshop

On March 10, students taking a class on soils at Highland Community College attended a cover crop workshop held at the Highland Community Center.  Speakers at the workshop included DeAnn Presly, Associate Professor of Environmental and Soils Sciences from Kansas State University and Mark Peterson from Southwest Iowa who spoke on his experiences incorporating cover crops into a row crop farming operation.  Kris Ethridge, area Soil Health Team Leader from the Natural Resource Service, presented several demonstrations on preventing soil erosion using soil reside and cover crops techniques.   In addition, several vendors were present illustrating cover crop seed options and their products.

Clifford Hawk, soil class instructor from HCC found it an interesting program and his students indicated it was worth the time to take in the event.  Students attending were, from left, Josephine Kiefer (Everest); Quentin Overdick (Robinson); Tyler Ulrich (Sabetha); Dustin Boeckman (Goff); Chelesa Gabriel (Grain Valley); and Kalie Koehler (Troy).  Other Highland students not pictured include Erin Dolecheck (Kellerton, IA), Elizabeth Patrick (Tonganoxie), and Mitchell Mueller (Oregon, MO).
