Head Coach Rick Eberly, entering his 24th season at Highland Community College, feels very confident they will turn things around this year. "We as a staff have worked very hard at addressing the areas that cost us a great deal of games last year." Eberly stated.

Eberly was named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Coach of the Year in 2000. Coach Eberly spent eight years as the Head Baseball Coach at Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO before coming to HCC. While at Tarkio, Eberly led his team to three Heart of America Conference Championships and was named the Heart of America Coach of the Year three times.

Coach Eberly played at Iowa Western, Texas Wesleyan, Clarinda Iowa A's, and in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Rick resides in Highland with his wife Angie, who is the Director of the Walters Wellness Center for HCC, and his son Cooper.

Josh Merrigan will start his first season with Highland Community College baseball as the Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator and will serve as the Camp Coordinator as well.  Before joining Highland baseball, he served as an Assistant Coach at Wayne State College, a Division II college, in Wayne, NE.

Prior to joining Wayne State College, Merrigan was the first head coach in Post 307 Baseball in Sioux Falls, SD. He helped form and establish Post 307 Baseball into a summer legion program prior to being the Head Coach for two years. Before that he directed Sioux Falls Post 15 West Legion for five years from 2006 to 2010. Post 15 West qualified for the State “A” Legion Tourney every year with Merrigan as head coach, and in 2007 were South Dakota State “A” American Legion Champs. That same summer that team finished third in the American Legion Central Plains Regional. As a coach in Legion baseball in South Dakota, he sent many players to four-year and two-year colleges. He also had one player in the MLB draft.

Before coaching Legion baseball in South Dakota, Merrigan was the Assistant Coach at Muscatine Community College in Muscatine, IA. During his time there, he served as Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. Several players that he recruited went on to sign with four- year colleges and two were drafted in the MLB later in their careers.

Merrigan played professional baseball for two years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization from 2001-2002. He also played in the Colorado Rockies organization for spring training in 2003. He continued his playing career in the Northern League for the Sioux Falls Canaries and Sioux City Explorers in 2003 and 2004.  In 2003, he was selected as a Northern League All-Star.

Prior to coaching, Merrigan played his college baseball as a pitcher at Butler Community College in El Dorado. He had a 10-4 record there in two seasons and earned All-Jayhawk West Conference honors his sophomore year.  He was drafted after his freshman year by the Montreal Expos. Then he went on to transfer to Oklahoma State University where he had a combined record of 16-6 in two years, making the Second Team All-Big 12 Conference both years.  He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 17th Round in 2001.

Merrigan started his career playing for Vermillion Post 1 Legion team in Vermillion, SD where he graduated from Vermillion High School in 1997. He was drafted out of high school by the Montreal Expos.

Merrigan has moved to Highland, and he has one son, JD.

Former Scottie Tyler Sweezey enters his eighth season as an assistant baseball coach for Highland Community College. Sweezey, a Topeka, KS native, has also served as an assistant coach for the Topeka Post 75 Junior Legion team and head coach of the Topeka Golden Giants and Topeka Star Greys.

Coach Sweezey played collegiately for HCC and also for the Topeka Golden Giants.
