HCC Tutoring Now Available Via Skype

Highland Community College Student Resource Center is offering tutoring through SKYPE for HCC Regional and On-Campus Students.  Tutoring is offered by Academic Tutors who are HCC students on our Highland campus. Add "hcctutors" to your Skype contact list and you are ready to go. If you need more information about downloading Skype, please read on.

What is SKYPE? Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet. Computer based calls to other users within the Skype service are free.  Skype’s additional features include instant messagingfile transfer, and video conferencing.  *See Instructions below for downloading and using SKYPE.

*Instructions for downloading and using SKYPE

Download SKYPE on your computer by going to www.skype.com and creating an account.  It is an easy process and you can have Skype up and running in 10 minutes. You do need to have a computer with a microphone and camera. If your computer is not equipped; you will need to purchase these items and install them on your computer. These items are relatively inexpensive and are easily installed.  Once Skype is installed complete a sound and video check when given the option.  Log in using your user name and password and search Skype Name “hcctutors” and add them to your contact list.  Click on the green phone icon. That’s it!  If a tutor is available they will answer your call. We would prefer you make an appointment, so please contact Audrey Caudle to set up a time at acaudle@highlandcc.edu

The SKYPE website also has FAQ and troubleshooting sections if you have difficulties.

Questions? Email  Audrey Caudle  at acaudle@highlandcc.edu (8 am  - 5 pm)

Tips For SKYPE Tutoring

  1. Tutoring is available in a number of subject areas. You can view our subject areas by clicking  here Study Groups.
  2. Tutors will have limited time.  You must be ready to be tutored. SKYPE tutoring sessions are generally limited to 20 minutes and times are dependent on whether the tutor has other callers waiting.
  3. Have you tried to solve the problem yourself?  Have your reread the instructions? Have you completed proofreading and reviewing yourself?
  4. Background noises such as a television and radio should be muted.  Conversations by other people in the room should also be kept at a minimum.
  5. Turn your cell phone to vibrate and do not answer calls during the tutoring session.   If the tutor has other callers waiting, they will end your call.
  6. Have your assignment sheet in front of you.  A tutor needs to know what the instructor is asking for.
  7. Have your textbook and questions ready.
  8. Tutors will need to leave their shift 10 minutes before the hour/ ½ hour and the next tutor may not arrive until a few minutes after the hour.  If a tutor is not available at the stated time, please call back in a few minutes.  Tutors are sometimes sick or have other commitments that cause them to be absent.  We will always attempt to have SKYPE coverage available, but this is always subject to change without notice.
  9. When the college is closed the tutors are not available.
